1 Sign in to Google

YouTube uses your Google account. If you already use Gmail, Google Photos, or Google Drive, you already have an account. If not, you'll need to create one for free.

  • Go to youtube.com and click Sign in in the top right.
  • Enter your Google account email and password.
  • If you don't have a Google account, click "Create account" and follow the steps.

2 Create Your YouTube Channel

Once signed in, you need to create your actual YouTube channel. By default, your channel uses your Google account name — but you can use a custom brand name instead.

  • Click your profile picture in the top right corner.
  • Click "Create a channel" from the dropdown menu.
  • Choose to use your name, or click "Use a custom name" for a brand channel.
  • Enter your channel name and click Create.
💡 Tip: A Brand Account (custom name) is better for creators — it lets you add managers, rename without affecting your personal Google account, and looks more professional.

3 Customize Your Channel

A well-customized channel builds trust and encourages subscriptions. You'll do this from YouTube Studio.

📸 Profile Picture

Use a clear photo or logo. Minimum 800×800px. It displays as a circle, so keep your key element centered. See our size guide →

🎨 Channel Banner

Upload a 2560×1440px banner image. Keep all text and logos inside the center 1546×423px safe zone. Use Canva for free templates.

📝 Channel Description

Write 150–300 words describing what your channel is about. Include relevant keywords naturally. Add your upload schedule (e.g. "New videos every Tuesday").

🔗 Channel Links

Add links to your website, Instagram, Twitter/X, and TikTok. These appear on your channel banner.

4 Upload Your First Video

Your first video doesn't need to be perfect — it needs to exist. Here's how to publish it:

  • Click the camera+ icon at the top of YouTube or go to YouTube Studio.
  • Select "Upload Video" and drag your video file in (MP4 recommended, up to 256GB).
  • Add a compelling title (include your main keyword).
  • Write a detailed description — first 2 lines show in search, so make them count.
  • Upload a custom thumbnail (1280×720px JPG/PNG).
  • Add tags (5–10 relevant keywords).
  • Set visibility to Public and hit Publish.

5 Optimize for Search

YouTube is the world's second-largest search engine. Optimizing your videos helps people discover your channel.

Title

Put your main keyword near the start. Keep it under 60 characters. Use numbers (e.g. '5 Ways to...').

Description

First 150 chars appear in search. Include keywords naturally. Add links to your other videos.

Tags

Use 5–10 tags: your main keyword, variations, and related topics. Don't keyword-stuff.

Thumbnail

High contrast, readable text, expressive face. A good thumbnail can double your click-through rate.

Chapters

Add timestamps in your description to create chapters. Helps with SEO and viewer retention.

End Screens

Add end screens in the last 20 seconds to promote other videos and gain subscribers.
